Trend Behind Girl Group’s Shorter, Simpler Names

2011 has been flooded with girl group debuts and with them, they brought an increase in strange, funky and short names, with the most recent being ‘Clinah‘. Since all labels seek to stand out, easy-to-remember names are becoming popular, due to the fact that they are impossible to forget.
In the past, when girl groups first began appearing in K-Pop, naes focused on being ambiguous and complex. Take for example Fin.K.L which means Fine Killing Liberty. The first generation gave way to names that had a bit of the cute factor, namely ‘Milk‘ and ‘Sugar‘.
Now, the market is moving towards trendy hook songs and now so are the names, with a large focus on foods. Dal Shabet, Chocolat, Orange Caramel, and C-Real all allude to food. Not only that, but they are easy and simple enough to remember, regardless of age, just like their catchy tracks.
One company, who gives names, stated, “We receive a lot of calls from music companies hoping to name their idol group debuts. They don’t want any big meaning behind it, but something that is easy to say and works fast in creating an image for them.”
In addition, C-Real’s agency stated, “We named the group in hopes that the girls will become ‘more real’ in their talents through time since they’re so young now, but there is also the side reference to the food item. We thought of going with an innocent or R&B inspired name, but the netizens had a lot of fun with C-Real since it’s easy to remember and also fun.”
